The importance of calorimeter calibration

As a key instrument for measuring the heat of matter, the measurement accuracy of the calorimeter directly affects the experimental results and production quality. If there are errors in the calorimeter, it may lead to problems such as energy calculation errors and product quality loss of control. Therefore, regular calibration of the calorimeter is a necessary measure to ensure the accurate operation of the instrument.



Preparation before calibration

Before carrying out the calibration work, it is necessary to ensure that the appearance of the calorimeter is intact, the components are firmly connected, and there is no loosening or damage. At the same time, prepare reference materials that meet national standards and meet the accuracy standards, such as benzoic acid, which has a stable calorific value and is a common reference material for the calibration of the calorimeter. In addition, it is necessary to ensure that the laboratory environment temperature is stable to avoid temperature fluctuations affecting the calibration results.

Specific correction steps

1. Instrument preheating: Turn on the calorimeter and let it preheat for at least 30 minutes to stabilize the internal temperature of the instrument and lay the foundation for subsequent calibration.

2. Weigh the standard material: Use a high-precision balance to accurately weigh the appropriate amount of benzoic acid and record its quality, accurate to 0.1mg. The weighing process should be rapid to avoid benzoic acid absorbing moisture in the air and affecting the quality.

3. Sampling and ignition: Put the weighed benzoic acid into the burning dish, install the ignition wire, and ensure that the ignition wire is in good contact with the benzoic acid. Then put the burning dish into the oxygen bomb of the calorimeter, fill it with enough oxygen, and ignite according to the regulations.

4. Data recording and calculation: The calorimeter completes the measurement and records the calorific value data displayed by the instrument. According to the known calorific value of the reference material and the actual weighing mass, combined with the measured value of the instrument, the calibration coefficient of the calorimeter is calculated. For example, if the calorific value of standard benzoic acid is 26434J/g, the weighing mass is 0.9987g, and the calorific value measured by the instrument is 26380J, the correction coefficient can be calculated through the formula.

5. Repeated correction: In order to improve the correction accuracy, the above steps need to be repeated 2-3 times, and the average value of the multiple correction coefficients is taken as the final correction coefficient.

Validation after correction

After the calibration is completed, the calorimeter is validated using another reference material with known calorific value. If the measurement result deviates from the standard value within the allowable range, the calibration is successful; if the deviation is too large, the calibration process needs to be re-checked to find the problem and correct again.

Through the above standardized calibration process, the measurement accuracy of the calorimeter can be effectively guaranteed, providing reliable data support for scientific research and production.
