What are the problems with the calorimeter?

In laboratory testing, energy analysis, and other fields, calorimeters play a key role, but in practice, they often face many problems. Understanding these and mastering solutions is essential to ensure the accuracy of testing.

First, the problem of instrument calibration deviation

The calibration of the calorimeter is the basis for accurate testing. If there is a deviation in the calibration, it will directly lead to the distortion of the test results. Common reasons are the failure of the standard material and the substandard temperature and humidity of the calibration environment. For example, if the standard benzoic acid is improperly stored and damp, the calorific value will change, and the result of calibrating the instrument with it will inevitably be inaccurate. When solving the problem, it is necessary to strictly control the storage conditions of the standard material, regularly check the valid period, and ensure that the calibration environment meets the requirements of the instrument. Make detailed records after each calibration.

Second, the problem of improper sample preparation

The sample preparation process is easy to be ignored, but it directly affects the test results. Too much or too little sample volume, uneven granularity, and excessive moisture content will interfere with the combustion process. For example, if the coal sample particles are too large and the combustion is incomplete, the measured calorific value will be low. The correct way is to strictly control the sample volume according to the instrument instructions, grind the sample to the specified particle size, and dry it if necessary to ensure that the sample is uniform and meets the detection requirements.

III. Detection abnormalities caused by instrument failures

After long-term use of the calorimeter, it is prone to failures such as ignition failure, oxygen bomb leakage, and temperature sensor failure. Ignition failure may be caused by poor contact of the ignition wire or unstable voltage; oxygen bomb leakage will cause insufficient oxygen supply and the sample cannot be fully burned. In case of such problems, it is necessary to check the fault point first, such as checking the ignition wire connection and replacing the sealing ring. If the parts are aging, replace the original accessories in time to avoid affecting the performance of the instrument due to mismatch of accessories.

Fourth, the problem of non-standard operation process

Unregulated operation by the operator is an important cause of problems with the calorimeter. For example, the sample was not compacted during loading, the oxygen bomb was not oxygenated enough, and the instrument was not cleaned according to the process. These seemingly minor mistakes can accumulate into detection errors. Standardized operation requires the operator to strictly follow the instrument operation manual, each step of the operation is accurate, and regular operation training is carried out to strengthen the standard awareness.



Mastering the common problems and solutions of the calorimeter can effectively reduce the detection error and improve the work efficiency. Whether it is calibration, sample preparation, or fault handling and standardized operation, it needs to be treated strictly in order for the calorimeter to continue to play the role of accurate detection.
