The Core Logic of calorimeter Energy Calculation

The calorimeter is a key device for accurately measuring the calorific value of a substance. Its energy calculation is based on the first law of thermodynamics. The core logic is to calculate the calorific value of a unit mass of a substance by measuring the heat released by the combustion of a substance and combining the heat capacity of the instrument.

Preparation of key parameters before calculation

Before calculating, two core parameters need to be clarified: first, the heat capacity of the instrument, that is, the heat required for the calorimeter to rise by 1 ° C, needs to be calibrated with a reference material (such as benzoic acid) with a known calorific value; second, the quality of the sample needs to be accurately weighed with a high-precision balance, and the error is controlled within ± 0.1mg to ensure accurate data.

The specific steps of energy calculation

1. Ignition and temperature collection: Place the sample in an oxygen bomb, fill it with high-pressure oxygen, and then ignite it. The temperature changes during the combustion process are collected in real time, and the initial temperature and maximum temperature are recorded.

2. Calculate the temperature rise: subtract the initial temperature from the maximum temperature to obtain the temperature difference, which is the key basis for calculating heat.

3. Apply the formula to calculate: The energy (calorific value) calculation formula is: calorific value (J/g) = (instrument heat capacity × temperature difference)/sample quality. If you need to convert to kcal, 1 cal = 4.186 joules, just convert the unit directly.

Key details that affect the accuracy of calculations

The ambient temperature needs to be stable to avoid heat loss due to excessive temperature differences.

The tightness of the oxygen bomb should be up to standard to prevent incomplete combustion.

When calibrating the heat capacity, it is necessary to repeat the experiment several times to take the average value to reduce the error.

By mastering these methods, calorimeters can accurately calculate the energy values of various fuels and chemical samples, providing reliable data support for energy testing and scientific research experiments.
