Common calorimeters are mainly oxygen bombs, and the operating mechanism of such instruments is directly related to the demand for oxygen.

Does a calorimeter require oxygen? The answer is case by case



For an oxygen bomb calorimeter, oxygen is an indispensable core condition. When measuring the calorific value of solid and liquid fuels (such as coal and petroleum products), the sample needs to be placed in a sealed oxygen bomb, and then the oxygen bomb is filled with high-pressure pure oxygen. High-pressure oxygen can ensure that the sample burns fully and quickly, avoiding heat measurement errors due to insufficient combustion. Only when the sample is completely burned can the released heat be accurately captured by the calorimeter, and then the accurate calorific value can be calculated.

However, some special types of calorimeters, such as adiabatic calorimeters, do not need to supply additional oxygen if the measurement object is a substance that can react without oxygen (such as some acid-base neutralization reactions). However, there are few such application scenarios, and most conventional fuel calorimeters rely on oxygen bomb calorimeters, so oxygen is a necessary condition for such instruments.

The crucial role of oxygen in the use of calorimeters

1. Guarantee complete combustion: Sufficient oxygen allows the sample to burn completely, avoiding residual unburned parts, ensuring complete heat release, and ensuring the accuracy of measurement results.

2. Maintain reaction conditions: The high-pressure oxygen environment provides the necessary reaction conditions for sample combustion, which is the key to triggering an efficient and stable combustion reaction, directly affecting the repeatability and stability of the measurement.

3. Improve detection efficiency: Oxygen facilitates rapid combustion, shortens sample combustion time, and can significantly improve the detection efficiency of the calorimeter, which is suitable for batch sample detection needs.

Precautions for oxygen when using a calorimeter

When using an oxygen bomb calorimeter, it is necessary to strictly control the purity and pressure of oxygen. Usually, the purity of oxygen is not less than 99.5%, the pressure needs to reach 2.8-3 MPa, and the oxygenation time needs to be sufficient to ensure that the amount of oxygen in the oxygen bomb is up to standard. At the same time, check the tightness of the oxygen bomb before operation to prevent oxygen leakage from affecting the combustion effect, so as to ensure the reliability of the measurement data.

In summary, conventional oxygen bomb calorimeters must rely on oxygen when detecting the calorific value of fuel; for calorimeters in special scenarios, the oxygen demand needs to be determined according to the measurement object and reaction type. Clarifying the role of oxygen in the calorimeter can better standardize the operation and ensure the accuracy of the measurement results.
